Have you ever looked at those impressive panoramas hanging from photo gallery walls, and wondered what does it take to make such an impressive photo ? Sometimes, it does not take more then an average photo and a few minutes playing with Adobe Photoshop Elements. First, and most important, you have to have a photo that has potential to be a good panorama. Take for example this photo to the right. Although it might seem that it is only a common snapshot, this photo is actually a good candidate for making a panorama. What makes a good panorama candidate ? 1. Cropping potential - absolutely essential since the whole idea revolves around intelligent cropping and enhancing. Basically what you are looking for is the photo that has little or no important subjects in the foreground , meaning it's top and bottom can be removed if necessary (as seen in red frame on the example). 2. Is you lens perfectly clean ? Yet, for some reason, you are still getting spots on your photos. Maybe it is time for you to clean your sensor. Please note that digital camera sensor cleaning, although a simple procedure, is not without hazard, and if you are not careful, you could potentially damage your sensor, or your mirror. Sensor cleaning might be best left to professionals, and it is cheap enough. However, it is not complicated procedure, and you can do it yourself. One of the most important rules in landscape photography is foreground interest. Having an object in the foreground leads the eye into the shot and provides a sense of depth. To illustrate the importance of having good foreground in landscape photography, check the photo of these longtail boats in Maya Bay to the left.  The boats give a viewer interesting foreground, and lead the eye into the frame, all the way up to the majestic rocks in the background. Maya Bay might be "The Beach", but it would not be nearly as impressive without the boats to give it a sense of scale. So, in that tone, our tip of the week is: Check your foreground ! Find an object in the foreground that will add depth to your landscape photos, and use it to your advantage. It can be anything: e.g. rock, branch, plant, boat, person. Our recommendation would be to pick something that will reinforce the overall theme of your landscape shot. Happy shooting.

When shooting photos, more often than not we try to squeeze as much as we can in a single photo. However, sometimes, especially in photography, less is more. And the closer you get, the more intimate and interesting a photo can become. Sometimes, when you are out there taking photos, it pays dividends to look at the details. But in order to get them you need to get really, really close. This is more often than not case in portrait photography, especially if your subject is a person or a pet. The rule of thumb is: if the photo is not interesting enough, you are not close enough. So our photography tip of the week is short, but simple: Get in close !!! Take close-up photos of your child or a pet, and experiment. You will notice that the closer you get, the more interesting your photo becomes. Happy shooting.
