Image controls is one of the least used settings on a DSLR, and rightfully so. Most professional photographers shoot in camera raw which in turn makes image controls seem redundant since they only affect look and feel of the jpeg file. However, if you are a beginner, or even enthusiast, playing with image control settings can potentially yield huge benefits, and save lots of post production work. Image controls are usually more related to digital compact cameras and entry-level DSLRs, since these cameras feature different recording modes. These recording modes, such as portrait, landscape, sports etc feature different preset image control settings as a part of the recording mode settings (together with aperture , shutter speed , ISO and the rest). Owning a DSLR means that you are no stranger to changing the lens . And more often than not, the change occurs somewhere in the field (unless you are a studio photographer), meaning that your DSLR is vulnerable to potential hazards caused by dust and elements. So here are a few tips to help you prevent some the hazards your DSLR camera might be exposed to. First, and most important, never, and i repeat, NEVER leave the open camera body facing straight up . In that case, it is as if you were inviting dust to fall inside your camera. The best way to change the lens is to tilt the open DSLR body to face downwards while you are changing the lens. Second, do not leave your DSLR camera body open for long . That also might be pushing your luck. You do not have to rush though, as you might (like me) drop the lens while rushing. Although not exactly a travel format, this book delivers a wealth of practical photography tips on all aspects of travel photography. When you first take a look at Lonely Planet's guide to Travel Photography, you will notice that it is hardly a travel format book. Although it is published in A5 format (148x210mm), its 350 pages make it a bit bulky and impractical for travels. It appears that the book is aimed towards both beginners, and enthusiasts who know their way around basic photography concepts, however, many intermediate photographers would argue the fact that a 90 page gear introduction is necessary, as it explains photography gear in too much detail, which is a topic that may be better covered by a general photography book. The subject is very well framed, and the background gives some hints of the space where the photo is taken (pool hall). The cracks in the wood provide some strong lines, that lead up to a red button. The overall tones are slightly muted which works very well with this particular shot. Great work.
