DPStudent Photomizer Contest - Winners

Hi and welcome to the Digital Photography Student Photomizer Contest awards. We have gotten many interesting photo submissions and selecting the winners was not easy.

The subject for the contest was "Green".

The photos have been evaluated in terms of originality, technical execution, impact, message and being on subject.

And the contest winners are:

1. Maple Leaf by Muratodentro - Simply put, amazing photo. This backlit leaf really draws attention. Three main veins divide the leaf, revealing almost fractal structure of the veins in the middle. The use of the shallow DOF further accentuates the effect. It does not take more than one look at the photo for the "Green" to come up. A job well done.

2. Vintage Bus Show by Phil Bird - These almost cartoonish busses must have been quite a sight. While almost all of our submissions involved some sort of flower or a plant, the idea of using non-nature objects for emphasizing "Green" scored a few originality points, and when combined with a good technical execution, produced a clear winner.

3. Green Tree Frog by MiguelCarvajal - This is as green as it gets. A green tree frog on a green leaf. Everything about this photo screams green. Use of a medium aperture (f/8) helped keep the frog and the leaf sharp, and the background just blurry enough for a spectator to get the context of the photo. The mere fact that the photo of this delicate creature was taken in a wildlife sanctuary near a wastewater treatment plant makes us think how fragile our planet really is. A powerful photo, with a strong message, definitely a winner.

4. Pattern Fever by ind{yeah} - This photo immediately stands out among many others, due to it's strong use of pattern. The green spikey leaves draw the viewer's eye, while the subtle effect of the out of focus leaves ignite interest. Simplicity and impact is the name of the game in this photo. Nice one.

5. Green by Rajarshi - A rice farmer in the green field. What I like about this photo is a good use of positive and negative space, and an interesting perspective. The low stance of the photographer really makes the green grass in the foreground stand out, thus making the setting for the farmer. I also like the way a human element is incorporated in the photo, showing the daily life of a rice farmer. This photo could easily be on the cover of a travel magazine. Wonderfully executed.
